The removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has further deepened divisions within the All Progressives Congress in the state, as opposition parties express readiness to welcome him should he decide to leave the ruling party.

Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. Since his removal, conflicting reactions have emerged within the party’s Governance Advisory Council, the highest decision-making body of the Lagos APC.

The disagreement among APC leaders became evident when two members of the GAC, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, openly opposed Obasa’s removal, describing it as illegal and a sign of disregard for party leadership. However, their stance was swiftly dismissed by another GAC member, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who described their comments as childish and inconsequential, urging party leaders to refrain from making hasty public statements on the issue.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly has stated that Obasa is expected to return to the House before any further action, including a potential probe, is considered. However, as of Friday, it remained unclear whether he had responded to the Assembly’s invitation, as the House spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, did not provide any updates.

While the APC struggles with internal conflicts, opposition parties in Lagos see the crisis as an opportunity to strengthen their ranks. The Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Benedict Tai, said the party would be willing to accept Obasa but would implement necessary checks to ensure he aligns with their principles before granting him any significant role. He noted that the crisis within the APC presented an advantage for the PDP, which is looking to regain political ground in Lagos.

Similarly, the Labour Party in Lagos has expressed its openness to welcoming Obasa if he chooses to leave the APC. The party’s chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, confirmed that while Obasa would be received, he would not enjoy automatic privileges, including a direct ticket for the 2027 governorship election. Ekong emphasized that all party members, including Obasa, would have to go through the primaries if they aspired to any elective position, adding that the Labour Party remains committed to fairness and due process.

As the APC remains embroiled in internal disputes over the impeachment, Obasa’s next political move could significantly impact the political landscape in Lagos, especially as the state gears up for the 2027 elections.
