The planned unveiling of the African Democratic Congress as a central opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections faced disruption on Wednesday after Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja cancelled the booking just hours before the event.
The organisers, who had fully paid for the venue, were informed on the morning of the event that it would no longer hold due to an unspecified “internal compliance matter.” The cancellation message was shared on social media by media personality and politician Dele Momodu.
Opposition leaders have accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of orchestrating the disruption. Momodu described the cancellation as part of a wider pattern of intimidation against dissenting political voices.
Salihu Lukman, speaking on behalf of People and Passion Consult Ltd, criticised the hotel’s action, describing it as a breach of contract. He insisted that the venue must honour the agreement, which was legally sealed and fully paid for.
The event was expected to unite opposition heavyweights including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, David Mark, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and several former governors across party lines.
