Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has backed a 50% increase in telecom tariffs, urging telecommunications companies to enhance their service delivery accordingly. This is the first tariff hike in over ten years, announced by the Nigerian Communications Commission, and it has sparked considerable debate nationwide.

During an interview with Arise TV at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Edun emphasized that the adjustment is crucial for maintaining the sector amidst rising operational costs and inflation. He noted, “Inflation has risen, and this must be reflected in telecom companies’ operations. While their prices are regulated, they cannot impose arbitrary tariffs. The adjustment is necessary due to the increasing cost of living, and I believe this 50% increase is just the beginning.”

Edun pointed out that tariff rates have not changed despite inflationary pressures, fluctuating exchange rates, and the significant investments needed to meet growing consumer demand. He expressed concern that these financial strains could jeopardize the long-term sustainability of the telecom sector, which plays a vital role in Nigeria’s digital economy.

He further highlighted the importance of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria’s infrastructure and economic landscape, stating, “The government anticipates that this tariff adjustment will lead to better call quality, fewer dropped calls, and an overall improvement in service.”

The minister reassured Nigerians that the tariff increase would be regularly reviewed to ensure fairness for both consumers and operators. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a robust telecommunications sector that encourages innovation, economic growth, and job creation.
