The Federal Government has set August 1, 2025, as the deadline to begin issuing stiff penalties to foreigners who have overstayed their visas. An online immigration amnesty portal will open in July, allowing affected individuals to regularize their stay before penalties take effect.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced this at a stakeholders’ sensitization event in Abuja, emphasizing that after the amnesty period, the law will be enforced strictly. He urged the diplomatic corps to encourage their citizens to take advantage of the amnesty.

The recently launched electronic visa regime has already processed over 14,000 applications within its first six weeks. Tunji-Ojo noted that the amnesty is part of a broader reform package aimed at improving Nigeria’s immigration system.

From May 1, a daily surcharge was introduced for visitors who remain in the country beyond their visa expiration. After the grace period, overstayers will face both the accrued surcharge and potential re-entry bans.

The new portal allows holders of expired visas to apply online for a stay permit and receive clearance without visiting an immigration office. Tunji-Ojo also highlighted the government’s efforts to save costs by phasing out manual document archiving, which previously cost nearly a billion naira annually.

The e-passport automation initiative aims to streamline the passport issuance process, reducing corruption and wait times for applicants. Tunji-Ojo expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s immigration system, stating that the e-visa system will promote economic growth while ensuring national security.

The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, also announced various innovative services under the new visa regime, including e-CERPAC and Temporary Work Permits, which will enhance the overall experience for travelers.
