Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have announced the resumption of their indefinite strike starting Monday, March 24, 2025. This decision follows the receipt of their February salaries, which did not include the promised N70,000 minimum wage.

The strike was confirmed in a communique issued after an emergency meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Gwagwalada on March 22. The union expressed deep concern over the failure to implement the new minimum wage, which was a key agreement from previous negotiations.

The communique criticized the “constant disregard for agreements” made with Area Council Chairmen and expressed disappointment at the payment process. It stated, “The payment of February Salary without the new Minimum Wage is disturbing and lacking sympathy for teachers’ plight.”

The union outlined several demands, including immediate implementation of the national minimum wage, payment of salary differentials, and disbursement of six months’ worth of minimum wage arrears. Teachers were urged to adhere to these demands and keep children at home during the strike period.

FCT NUT Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, expressed dissatisfaction with the area council chairmen’s failure to honor commitments, stating that the decision to process salaries without the new wage is “disturbing” and reflects a lack of empathy for the challenges faced by teachers.
