Former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Kabiru Mijinyawa, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, citing what he described as an unfair and non-transparent primary election conducted by the party.
Mijinyawa, a fourth-term lawmaker representing Yola South Constituency, served as Speaker between 2015 and 2019 during the administration of former Governor Jibrilla Bindow. He was first elected into the state Assembly in 2011.
The lawmaker had sought the APC ticket to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives but lost the party’s primary to Ahmad Salihijo, a former Chief Executive of the Rural Electrification Agency. He subsequently announced his withdrawal from the APC, saying the process that produced the candidate did not meet acceptable democratic standards.
In his resignation letter, Mijinyawa said he could no longer remain in a political party where he believed internal processes were being conducted in a manner inconsistent with fairness and democratic principles.
His departure comes amid growing political movement within Adamawa ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mijinyawa is reportedly set to join the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, which has recently attracted prominent political figures in the state.
The APM’s profile in Adamawa received a boost after former APC governorship aspirant Abdulrahman Haske reportedly joined the party and emerged as its governorship candidate.
Mijinyawa’s exit adds to a series of recent resignations from the APC in Adamawa, raising fresh questions about the party’s strength and internal cohesion as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
