Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, has revealed that his departure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was made with the full knowledge of former President Muhammadu Buhari. El-Rufai confirmed his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in a statement on his verified Facebook page on Monday.
In an interview with BBC Hausa service, El-Rufai elaborated on the circumstances surrounding his decision, stating, “I left the APC with his full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision to leave the party because I involve and consult with him on all my matters.”
He reflected on how he previously worked closely with Buhari during his time as governor, recalling instances where he sought approval for cabinet nominees. El-Rufai emphasized, “I consult with him in all I do,” citing his enduring respect and the significant influence Buhari has had on his political decisions.
When questioned about political mentorship, El-Rufai acknowledged Buhari as his primary political mentor or “godfather” but chose not to disclose others to avoid potential pressure. Regarding his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he stated, “I haven’t regretted it, but I have been taken by surprise.”
El-Rufai’s support for Tinubu stemmed from concerns regarding the political marginalization of Muslims in the South West and the belief that the 2023 presidential seat should be zoned to the southern region to promote fairness and balance in the country.
His recent comments come amid growing fractures within the APC, with reports of several loyalists and party members departing. El-Rufai’s defection, along with these shifts, signals a significant moment in Nigerian politics as parties realign ahead of upcoming elections.
