Heavy rainfall early Wednesday caused the collapse of eight buildings and displaced residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The rain, which began around 6:15 AM and lasted three hours, affected areas like Bulumkutu, Abuja, Moduganari, and Ngomari.
A Bulumkutu resident, Ahmodu Ibrahim, recounted how water flooded his apartment, prompting him to evacuate his family. Shop owner Aisha Suraju reported that her goods were ruined by the floodwaters.
In response, the Borno State Police Command mobilized personnel for rescue operations in the affected areas. According to police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso, while eight buildings collapsed, no casualties were reported. The police have deployed patrol teams to maintain order and prevent looting in evacuated homes.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmaji praised the officers’ swift response and urged residents to remain calm. He cautioned parents to monitor their children and prevent them from playing in floodwaters, highlighting the serious risks involved.
