Prominent opposition figure and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a direct threat to democracy.

Tinubu’s controversial decision, which includes the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly for six months, has sparked nationwide backlash.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Momodu expressed disappointment, saying Tinubu’s actions contradict the democratic ideals he once fought for.

“I think it is very unfortunate. I know President Tinubu very well—we were in exile together, and he fought gallantly for democracy. But what we are witnessing now is worse than dictatorship,” he said.

Momodu stressed that while leaders can fail in economic policies and other areas, democracy must be protected. He urged Tinubu to reverse course, emphasizing that intimidation of the opposition is not a sustainable strategy for governance.

“The only thing that can guarantee a second term is to do your job well. You do not need to intimidate anybody,” he warned.

The PDP stalwart also cautioned Tinubu against relying on misleading advisers, insisting that true supporters would tell him the hard truth.

With political tensions rising over the Rivers State crisis, many Nigerians are watching closely to see if the president will reconsider his decision.
