Two individuals, Olufunsho Dayo Chevy and Uwem Udo Nya, have been convicted of oil theft and ordered to pay a total fine of N10 million to the Federal Government. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Command, secured the conviction, which includes a fine of N5 million each for the offenders.

The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the judgement in a press statement.

According to the statement, the case involved the vessel MT New Angel and the company Edi Eurolink Distribution. The convicts were apprehended by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory and subsequently handed over to the EFCC on July 30, 2024. Both Chevy and Nya pleaded guilty to charges related to stealing and unlicensed dealing in petroleum products.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Calabar delivered the sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime in a country grappling with oil theft issues.
