The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has clarified that the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge is neither shaky nor defective, contrary to recent online rumors.
Reports circulating on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook claimed that a section of the bridge had opened up and that it was unstable. In response, the minister issued a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Orji Orji, calling these claims an attempt to undermine public confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Upon hearing the rumors, Umahi promptly dispatched a team of engineers, led by the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State, Engr. Olukorede Kesha, to inspect the bridge. The team’s assessment confirmed that the bridge remains in excellent condition, with its structural integrity intact.
“The Minister of Works, upon hearing this baseless rumour, promptly deployed a team of engineers to inspect the entire length and width of the 11-kilometre bridge,” the statement read.
The statement further highlighted the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing inherited road infrastructure challenges. The Third Mainland Bridge, along with other iconic bridges in Lagos, has been prioritized for maintenance and repair.
“The Renewed Hope administration has demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to revamping inherited road infrastructure deficiencies,” the statement noted, emphasizing that comprehensive repairs are underway for the bridge.
The minister urged the public to disregard the rumors, assuring Nigerians of the government’s commitment to their welfare. He reiterated that the Federal Ministry of Works is fully equipped and dedicated to transforming Nigeria’s road infrastructure with a focus on quality, speed, and value for money.
As the government continues to prioritize infrastructure improvements, the minister assured the public that roads constructed under the Renewed Hope administration will stand the test of time.
