The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation in the country, calling on both federal and state governments to take immediate action to protect citizens and address security lapses. In a statement from President Archbishop Lucius Ugorji and Secretary Bishop Donatus Aihmiosion, the bishops condemned ongoing attacks in predominantly Christian communities, particularly in the North and Middle Belt, where many lives have been lost.
The bishops highlighted several recent incidents, including mass abductions and violent attacks that have resulted in significant casualties. They stressed that the pervasive violence threatens family life, education, and social stability across Nigeria.
In addition to demanding justice for the victims and accountability for perpetrators, the bishops called for the safe return of those abducted and support for displaced individuals. They also voiced concerns over violations of Christian rights, including attacks on places of worship.
Citing the tragic case of Deborah Samuel Yakubu, they emphasized that justice is crucial to prevent further acts of impunity. The CBCN concluded by appealing for national unity, urging citizens to reject hatred and work collectively towards peace and rebuilding society. They reiterated that lasting peace requires justice, courage, and a commitment to upholding the sanctity of human life.
