Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and activist, was arrested by armed police shortly after appearing in court for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. This incident occurred outside the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore, known for advocating Kanu’s release, was approached by police officers who stated they were acting on an order from the Commissioner of Police. Despite requesting a formal invitation and insisting that his lawyer accompany him, he was taken away in a police van.
Sowore had participated in the recent #FreeNnamdiKanu protests, which reportedly led to the arrests of 12 individuals, including Kanu’s younger brother and one of his lawyers. The police have filed charges, alleging that the protest involved inciting disturbance and disrupting public peace, in violation of a court order.
The court is set to hear the plea of the defendants on the charges, and it remains uncertain if Sowore’s name will be added to the list of defendants.
