The Nigerian Army has warned of possible coordinated attacks by terrorist groups, including the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable public places across the country.
The warning was contained in an intelligence communication dated September 9, 2026, which raised concerns about increasing mobilisation of terrorist fighters and resources across parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central and some areas of the South-West.
The Army identified Catholic and Protestant churches, primary and secondary schools, NYSC orientation camps and other public facilities as possible targets, warning that attacks could occur at short notice.
It also reported the movement of scores of armed fighters from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State, while suspected ISWAP members were allegedly conducting surveillance and reconnaissance of some potential targets with the assistance of local collaborators.
The military expressed particular concern over the planned resumption of schools for the 2026/2027 academic session, warning that terrorists could exploit the concentration of students and teachers to cause mass casualties and heighten public fear.
According to the intelligence assessment, the suspected groups may have moved beyond planning to preparatory activities, raising concerns about the possibility of attacks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Army has consequently called for heightened vigilance, increased surveillance and stronger security measures around schools, religious centres, NYSC camps and other locations considered vulnerable to attacks.
