Popular Lagos socialite Emeka Okonkwo, better known as E-Money, was released on Tuesday evening after being detained and interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged abuse of the Naira and defacement of U.S. currency.
E-Money was arrested Monday night at his Omole residence in Lagos and taken to the EFCC’s Abuja office. The EFCC stated that his arrest was linked to publicly spraying U.S. dollars, a violation of Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange Act, which prohibits mishandling of both local and foreign currencies.
An EFCC official confirmed that investigations are ongoing and E-Money may be charged in court once the probe concludes.
After regaining his freedom, E-Money posted a video on Instagram thanking his supporters, writing: “No tension, everywhere good, I see all your love and support. God bless you all.” The video featured a gospel track, reinforcing his gratitude.
Fellow celebrity Pascal Okechukwu, aka Cubana Chief Priest, also celebrated his release on Instagram, posting: “My brother don fall out, To God be the glory.”
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale could not be reached for official comment as of press time.
