The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of attempting to suppress legitimate opposition under the guise of national security. This accusation follows remarks by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information, Bayo Onanuga, who alleged that certain political figures are conspiring to overthrow the government.
In a statement, ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasized that the party is committed to rescuing Nigeria from what it calls the “irredeemable incompetence” of the current administration. Abdullahi criticized the APC’s increasing hostility toward dissent and questioned its discomfort with opposition politics.
The ADC labeled Onanuga’s comments as irresponsible and potentially harmful, warning that such rhetoric could justify a broader crackdown on opposition voices. They reaffirmed their dedication to democratic processes and called on President Tinubu to rein in his aides to prevent further escalation of political tensions.
The ADC urged citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to delegitimize the opposition, stressing the importance of a free and competitive political environment for the health of Nigeria’s democracy. They also appealed to the international community to monitor the situation closely and hold the Tinubu administration accountable for any actions undermining democratic freedoms.
