Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical doctor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, has been released after being abducted by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday. He was kidnapped in front of his home while returning from work and spent two harrowing nights in captivity.

His release occurred in the early hours of Thursday, and it was confirmed by colleagues in the Urology Department as well as Martina Onwuka, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NAUTH. Details surrounding his release remain unclear, including whether a ransom was paid or if he managed to escape.

The news of Dr. Onuigbo’s freedom sparked jubilation among staff and colleagues at NAUTH, who expressed gratitude for his safe return. A colleague from the Urology Department, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the psychological toll that such an ordeal could take, despite the relief of his release.

“We thank God that he has been released. We are not yet sure if any ransom was paid, and we cannot confirm if he was physically hurt. However, the psychological trauma of such an ordeal is significant. The most important thing is that he has reunited with his family,” the colleague stated.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed that Dr. Onuigbo had safely returned to his family.

This incident highlights ongoing security concerns in the region, as abductions continue to pose a threat to the safety of residents.
