The death toll from recent attacks by gunmen in Logo and Ukum local government areas of Benue State has tragically increased to 55. These coordinated assaults, believed to be carried out by armed herders, occurred between Thursday and Friday, targeting communities such as Ugondo, Tyuluv, Gbagir, and others.

The Police Command had initially reported 17 fatalities, with five killed in Ukum and 12 in Logo. However, during an on-the-spot assessment tour on Saturday, Governor Hyacinth Alia revealed that the death toll had risen significantly, with 27 confirmed dead in Logo and 28 in Ukum.

Governor Alia stated, “Since these attacks started, we have recovered corpses. As of yesterday, we received some, and today the tally rose to 27 in Logo. In Ukum, security operatives have recovered over 28 corpses.” He also mentioned that some families had been allowed to conduct immediate burials under the protection of security personnel.

Describing the situation as “a real war,” Alia emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive support from the Federal Government to address the ongoing violence and displacement of innocent citizens. The affected communities have largely been deserted, with residents seeking refuge in IDP camps in Zaki-Biam and Ugba.

The governor has pledged to cover the burial and medical expenses for those affected, while commending security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace in the state during this challenging time.
