Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating polio by June 2025. This announcement comes as UNICEF highlights a concerning increase in polio cases in the state between 2022 and 2025.

During an orientation training session organized by the state Ministry of Health for health personnel and local government officials in Kaduna, Governor Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, emphasized the government’s determination to address both polio and maternal mortality.

He noted the attendance of various government officials and traditional rulers at the training, signifying the seriousness of the state’s commitment to combating these health challenges. The deputy governor urged health workers and local leaders to actively monitor immunization efforts within their communities, reiterating that any health worker lacking commitment would be replaced promptly.

UNICEF’s representative in Kano, Mr. Rahma Rahood Muhammad, stressed that many children in the state remain vulnerable to the polio virus and have not received routine vaccinations. The governor’s statements underscore the urgent need for effective immunization strategies to protect the health of Kano’s children and reduce maternal mortality rates.
