The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has warned legal practitioners against charging clients in foreign currencies, saying lawyers found culpable could face prosecution.
The Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, issued the warning on September 11, 2026, during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law.
The delegation, led by the task force’s Head, Moshood Abiola, visited the EFCC official in Lagos as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in tackling illegal and unethical practices within the legal profession.
Kaltungo expressed concern over lawyers engaging in practices considered unlawful or unethical, including allegedly charging clients in foreign currencies.
He warned that the commission would take action against legal practitioners found to have violated applicable financial regulations.
The EFCC official said the commission would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable after investigation.
