The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as recognised leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The commission said the decision followed a court order directing it to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of an ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

INEC explained that it had received conflicting legal claims from different factions of the ADC, each seeking recognition. To avoid violating court directives, it decided to suspend recognition of all parties involved and halt further dealings with any faction until the case is settled.

The move has drawn criticism from opposition figures. The ADC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the decision as an attempt to weaken opposition parties, while allies of Peter Obi warned it could create tension if not properly handled.

However, a rival faction within the ADC backed INEC’s action, saying it aligns with the Court of Appeal’s directive.

INEC also stated that it would not recognise any individual claiming leadership of the party and would avoid involvement in its internal affairs until the court delivers a final judgment.
