No fewer than 30 students and one teacher have been hospitalised following a gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the school assembly on Wednesday when a gaseous substance spread across the school premises, causing panic among students and staff.
Several students were said to have collapsed after inhaling the substance, prompting an emergency response that led to their evacuation to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
Initial reports suggested a possible gas explosion, while others linked the incident to a chemical odour from the school laboratory during a practical session.
School authorities later clarified that the incident involved a strange chemical smell within the premises, which triggered vomiting and fainting among students.
The Ogun State Ministry of Environment confirmed that there was no explosion, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact source and type of gas involved.
Medical officials at the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, said all affected students and the teacher were in stable condition, while local authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.
