A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Nollywood actress Angela Okorie bail in the sum of ₦5 million following her arraignment on allegations bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation.
Justice Emeka Nwite, while ruling on the bail application filed by the defence, held that there was no sufficient material before the court to suggest that the actress would abscond if released on bail, despite opposition from the prosecution.
Okorie is facing a seven-count amended charge relating to alleged transmission of threatening and offensive messages via social media platforms between 2024 and 2025. The prosecution alleges that the posts were directed at a fellow actress and amounted to cyberstalking under relevant laws. She pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The court noted that bail remains a constitutional right and should not be denied unless there are compelling reasons. The judge, however, ordered that the actress remain in custody until she meets the bail conditions.
As part of the bail terms, the court directed that she produce one surety in like sum, who must be a senior civil servant. The surety is required to submit an affidavit of means, evidence of employment, and have their address verified by the court.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to a later date for the continuation of trial, as the court prepares to hear substantive arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
