Rivers Assembly Insists Impeachment Process Against Governor Fubara Still Ongoing

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed reports claiming it has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

In a statement issued on Friday night, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Enemi George, described the reports as false and misleading, stressing that the lawmakers have not withdrawn the impeachment move. He said the speculation was deliberately circulated to create disaffection and confusion among the public.

George maintained that the impeachment process remains active and fully in line with the Assembly’s constitutional responsibilities. According to him, the House will not be distracted by what he termed blackmail, threats, or false narratives aimed at undermining its authority.

He further confirmed that notices detailing the alleged acts of misconduct have already been served on both the governor and his deputy. He explained that the House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to check infractions by the executive arm of government and would continue to carry out that duty.

This development marks the third attempt by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara since he assumed office in 2023, against the backdrop of a prolonged political crisis in the state linked to tensions between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Earlier impeachment efforts in 2023 and 2025 were halted following presidential interventions and peace agreements, including a six-month state of emergency declared in March 2025, which temporarily suspended elected officials in the state. Although Governor Fubara returned to office in September 2025 after the emergency rule was lifted, political tensions have persisted.

The latest move by the Assembly suggests that the long-running power struggle in Rivers State remains unresolved, with lawmakers insisting that the impeachment process is still firmly on course.
