The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has officially endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan to represent the party in the 2027 presidential election. In a communiqué issued after their 8th meeting in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, the group described Jonathan as “the only man capable of redeeming the PDP and restoring Nigeria’s unity.”
The group, which consists of PDP loyalists from across the 19 northern states, called for an “aggressive and coordinated media campaign” to mobilize support for Jonathan and promote the party’s renewed agenda. They expressed confidence in the leadership of National Chairman Umar Damagum, praising his efforts to reposition the party.
Northern coordinator Yusuf Abubakar emphasized their optimism, stating, “We remain optimistic that the PDP is not beyond redemption. With genuine commitment and collective sacrifice, our great party will reclaim power at the national level and in states currently under the APC.”
Abubakar also reaffirmed that there would be “no going back on Jonathan in 2027,” highlighting the former president’s dedication to peace and stability. The group dismissed concerns regarding Jonathan’s eligibility to run again, asserting that such issues have already been resolved.
However, the group expressed concern over the negative actions of some party leaders allegedly undermining reconciliation efforts. They accused certain elements within the National Working Committee of collaborating with the APC-led government while pretending to build the PDP.
The communiqué concluded with a call for unity among party members to restore the PDP’s strength ahead of the upcoming election, reaffirming their loyalty to the party rather than to individuals. The endorsement of Jonathan has sparked debates within the PDP, with factions either supporting him or advocating for alternatives from other regions.
