Tragedy struck on the River Benue on Saturday when a boat capsized near Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of 20 individuals, predominantly women and children.
The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, reported on Sunday that rescue operations are ongoing, with 11 survivors successfully rescued from the water. “The incident has been confirmed, and we are continuing rescue efforts,” Anene stated.
The victims were returning to Doma in Nasarawa State after attending a market day in Ocholonya village when their wooden boat overturned. A local resident, identified as Adanyi, recounted the events, noting, “On Saturday was Ocholonya market day. The boat was carrying women and children back to Odenyi in Nasarawa State when it capsized, leading to the drowning of everyone.”
Melvin James, the chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, confirmed the incident during a phone call, indicating that the mishap occurred around 7 PM on Saturday. He stated that the victims were traders from the Apochi and Odenyi communities in Doma, Nasarawa State. “I have been informed about the incident, and reports suggest that over 20 individuals may have perished. Local divers have reported recovering bodies, but I await an official update for the exact numbers,” said James.
Efforts are underway to collaborate with officials from Nasarawa State to support the affected families. Additionally, the Nigerian Navy has been contacted to assist in the rescue operations and has reportedly recovered the wreckage of the boat from the river.
Engr. Samson Onobun, Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Makurdi, confirmed that officials were dispatched to investigate the incident after being informed on Saturday night. “Yes, I’m aware. We have sent personnel to conduct a thorough investigation. Once they return, I will provide a clearer explanation of what transpired,” he stated.
