Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has made a critical appeal to the federal government to take immediate action to prevent Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents from recapturing Marte, a town in northern Borno. This appeal comes in the wake of a recent attack that displaced approximately 20,000 residents to Dikwa, raising concerns about the security of the region.
Zulum emphasized the need for urgent and decisive measures to secure Marte, which he described as the only remaining community in the local government area (LGA). He warned that if Marte falls, the entire LGA could be lost to insurgents. The governor called for the deployment of additional troops and improved logistics to strengthen security in the area. He noted that Marte had been resettled four years ago but has now been attacked again, underscoring the need to “hold this ground.”
In a statewide broadcast, Zulum declared May 19, 2025, as a day of voluntary fasting and prayer for peace in Borno and Nigeria. He urged citizens to seek divine intervention and unity in addressing the state’s security challenges. Zulum mentioned that his administration is collaborating with the federal government and security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and community vigilance. He also highlighted the importance of reinforcing volunteer security forces, such as the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters, and vigilantes.
The governor cautioned communities against aiding insurgents, stating that such collaboration undermines collective efforts to combat insecurity. To tackle rising urban crime, Zulum announced the reconstitution of the Anti-Social Vices Committee, emphasizing the need to prevent criminals from destabilizing progress in the state. He also addressed recent water shortages in Maiduguri, attributing them to damage from last year’s floods, and assured that restoration efforts are underway.
Governor Zulum concluded his address by expressing condolences to the families of fallen soldiers and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and development in Borno State.
