US Govt Shutdown Begins After Congress Fails to Reach Deal

The US government commenced a shutdown on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, following a failure by lawmakers and President Donald Trump to resolve a budget impasse. The disagreement centered on Democratic demands for healthcare funding.

Republicans and Democrats have placed blame on each other for the deadlock, which is expected to impact hundreds of thousands of government workers and millions of Americans who rely on government services. The shutdown will halt operations at numerous federal departments and agencies.

President Trump has threatened to retaliate against Democrats by targeting progressive priorities and potentially initiating mass public sector job cuts. He suggested using the shutdown to eliminate initiatives he opposes, particularly those associated with Democrats.

Government operations officially began to cease at 12:01 am (0401 GMT) on Wednesday. A last-minute effort in the Senate to approve a short-term funding resolution, previously passed by the House, was unsuccessful.

Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer criticized Republicans for the shutdown, stating they wouldn’t protect America’s healthcare. He affirmed that the fight for the American people would continue.

Essential services such as the Postal Service, the military, and welfare programs like Social Security and food stamps will not be affected. However, it is estimated that up to 750,000 workers could be temporarily sent home each day without pay until the shutdown concludes.

This marks the first shutdown since a 35-day closure during Trump’s previous term almost seven years ago.

The White House has assigned blame to the Democrats, with the Office of Management and Budget directing agencies to implement shutdown plans. House Speaker Mike Johnson questioned how long Senator Schumer would prolong the situation, citing potential impacts on nutrition programs, veterans’ healthcare, and disaster relief efforts. Former Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris placed the responsibility on the Republicans, who control the White House and both houses of Congress.
