Rufai, a 1994 AFCON winner, was confirmed deceased by former Nigerian midfielder Waidi Akanni, who noted that his body was deposited at a Lagos hospital. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) honored Rufai as a “giant of Nigerian football,” expressing deep sorrow over his passing.
Ex-Eagles captain Segun Odegbami reflected on Rufai’s health struggles, expressing shock at the news. Former teammate Etim Esin shared his devastation, calling it a great loss and offering condolences to Rufai’s family. Another former goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba, noted the influence Rufai had on his career.
Super Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa paid tribute, highlighting Rufai’s heroic contributions to Nigerian football and his lasting legacy. The Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Remo Stars, also extended condolences to Rufai’s family and the football community.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed sorrow over Rufai’s death, recognizing his significant impact on the sport. Rufai, born on August 24, 1963, debuted for the Green Eagles in 1981 and played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s football history, including participation in two FIFA World Cups.
Beyond his playing career, Rufai dedicated himself to mentoring young talent and served as coordinator for the Nigeria U-23 team. His legacy is deeply etched in the hearts of football fans and players alike.
