The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned citizens, especially expectant mothers, against travelling to the US solely to give birth and secure American citizenship for their children.

In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Mission described the practice—commonly referred to as birth tourism—as a violation of US visa policy.

“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read.

The Mission further warned that any visa applicant suspected of planning to give birth in the US will be denied entry. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” it added.

The statement is a clear reminder that visa misuse carries serious consequences, including outright rejection and potential long-term travel restrictions.

Authorities have consistently advised visa applicants to state their intentions honestly and ensure that all travel plans are consistent with the terms of their visas.
