President Bola Tinubu has urged Professor Joash Amupitan, the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to prioritize transparency and non-violence as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. This statement was made during the oath-taking ceremony held at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu emphasized that credible elections are essential for public trust and democratic stability, stating that Amupitan’s appointment reflects confidence in his abilities. He tasked Amupitan with protecting the integrity of elections and enhancing the institutional capacity of INEC, especially with the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

Amupitan, who was confirmed by the Senate on October 16, 2025, expressed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring fair elections. He highlighted the necessity of collaboration with all stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organizations, to achieve credible electoral outcomes.

During his address, Amupitan acknowledged the challenges ahead, stressing the importance of teamwork, discipline, and integrity within the commission. He described his role as a “divine” call to serve the nation and committed to restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

The ceremony included remarks from the Acting Chairman of INEC, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who praised Amupitan’s qualifications and the important task he faces in ensuring the electoral process meets the expectations of Nigerians.

Amupitan is the first INEC chairman from Kogi State and succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who oversaw the commission since 2015. His leadership is seen as a pivotal moment for INEC, particularly with the upcoming elections viewed as a crucial test of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
