President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sympathies to former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua following a tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which resulted in two fatalities and left Joshua injured.
In a statement on his official X handle, Tinubu described the incident as casting a deep shadow on the season. He extended his condolences to Joshua and his family, acknowledging the emotional weight of this unfortunate event.
“As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” Tinubu remarked.
The President also prayed for Joshua’s strength and recovery, as well as for the souls of the deceased.
The accident occurred on Monday morning in the Makun area of Ogun State. Reports indicate that Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck around 11:00 am, leading to the tragic outcome. A video showed the former champion being rescued from the wreckage, appearing to have sustained injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the cause of the accident to speeding and wrongful overtaking. Preliminary findings suggest that the Lexus Jeep, suspected of exceeding the legal speed limit, lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the truck parked alongside the road.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for Joshua.
This incident comes shortly after Joshua’s notable boxing victory over YouTuber Jake Paul in Miami, and the implications for his career and well-being are being closely monitored.
