President Bola Tinubu has promised a grand reception for the Super Falcons following their dramatic win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Nigerian women’s national football team secured their 10th continental title in style, staging a remarkable comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The Moroccans took an early lead with goals from tournament top scorer Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy in the 12th and 24th minutes, respectively. However, the resilient Falcons bounced back in the second half, with Esther Okoronkwo converting a penalty in the 64th minute before assisting Folasade Ijamilusi for the equaliser seven minutes later. Jennifer Echegini sealed the victory in the 88th minute, completing a historic comeback.

President Tinubu joined the celebrations via a video call with the players and coaching crew shortly after the win.

“As a team, we are very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy,” Tinubu said. “You will be celebrated. I congratulate all the coaches, the management, the ministers and officials. To win it for the 10th time is no small feat.”

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, during the call, expressed gratitude to the President for approving their bonuses and assured him that the trophy would be presented in Abuja. Tinubu responded with anticipation: “Good, I am looking forward to that.”

Earlier, in a separate statement issued by his media team, the President hailed the Falcons’ performance as a symbol of Nigerian resilience and determination.

“The Super Falcons’ spectacular display, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side on their home turf, exemplifies the Nigerian spirit—resilient, tenacious, and unwavering,” the statement read. “With hard work and unity, you have delivered the victory Nigerians dreamed of and prayed for. Congratulations. Nigeria celebrates you.”

The Falcons’ latest triumph adds to their rich legacy, having previously won the WAFCON title in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
