President Bola Tinubu convened an urgent meeting with military service chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa to address the escalating violence across Nigeria, particularly in Plateau and Benue states. This meeting began shortly after 3:00 PM and follows a series of tragic incidents that have left hundreds displaced and numerous fatalities reported.

This gathering comes on the heels of Tinubu’s return from an 18-day working visit to Paris and London, where he received ongoing security briefings. The President’s concerns were heightened by recent reports, including the killing of at least 56 individuals in Benue due to attacks attributed to armed herders. The violence has resulted in the destruction of homes and the displacement of approximately 3,000 people.

Senator James Manager, who confirmed the meeting, indicated that the discussions would focus on strategies to combat the rising tide of violence and ensure the safety of citizens. “The President is committed to reviewing the security situation and implementing measures to restore peace in affected regions,” Manager stated.

The urgency of the situation has prompted calls for immediate action from various stakeholders, who have expressed frustration over the ongoing insecurity. In light of these developments, the President is expected to outline a robust security strategy during this critical meeting.

As the nation grapples with these challenges, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and properties of Nigerians, emphasizing that keeping children in school and ensuring their safety is a top priority.
