A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the House of Representatives as lawmakers clashed over President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The incident occurred when Hon. Marie Ebikake from Bayelsa and Hon. Blessing Amadi from Rivers engaged in a heated argument regarding the constitutionality of the president’s decision prior to the start of the day’s plenary session.

The atmosphere grew increasingly charged, with other members expressing their frustrations by hitting tables and some appearing ready to escalate the dispute. Amidst the chaos, lawmakers were seen discussing the implications of the emergency declaration and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, indicating the deep divisions within the chamber.

President Tinubu’s declaration, announced the previous night, involved suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, and the entire State House of Assembly for an initial six-month period. In their place, the president appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-ette Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.

This emergency move has sparked significant controversy, reflecting the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State and raising questions about the implications of such actions at the national level. As tensions continue to rise, the House of Representatives remains divided on the best course of action regarding the situation in Rivers.
