Activists, including lawyers, staged a protest at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja, led by former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. They demanded the immediate removal of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police.
The protesters arrived around 10:20 AM, expressing their discontent over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to extend Egbetokun’s tenure, which they argue violates the constitution. According to them, public servants should not serve beyond 35 years or the age of 60, whichever comes first. Egbetokun was expected to retire last year after completing 35 years of service.
Sowore and the activists criticized Egbetokun for remaining in office despite his mandatory retirement in September 2024. They carried banners depicting Egbetokun with a crossed-out face, chanting slogans against his continued tenure.
Sowore highlighted the injustice of Egbetokun overseeing the retirement of other senior officers while refusing to step down himself. He referenced a retired officer who was jailed for impersonating a police officer, contrasting this with Egbetokun’s situation.
The protesters pointed out that even the Attorney General confirmed Egbetokun’s tenure had ended, questioning why President Tinubu allowed him to stay. Sowore suggested that if Tinubu valued Egbetokun, he could appoint him to another role after retirement, but insisted no retired officer should wear police uniform.
The protest emphasized that Egbetokun’s extended tenure demoralizes younger officers, stifling their career growth. Sowore urged the need for change, stating that the position of IGP should not be held hostage, preventing aspiring officers from realizing their dreams.
