Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to prevent the influx of counterfeit drugs into Nigeria. His appeal follows alarming discoveries in Onitsha’s markets, particularly the Ọgbọ Ogwụ market, where regulators found large quantities of falsified and banned drugs.
During a recent visit to the market, Soludo emphasized the need for stricter control of the supply chain to ensure that dangerous products do not reach local markets. He stated that while local regulatory efforts are ongoing, the solution must begin at the entry points where these products are smuggled into the country.
In a statement on X.com, he expressed concern over the shocking discoveries made during inspections, revealing that many shops were found harboring banned drugs. Soludo questioned how these counterfeit drugs managed to pass through various ports and reach local markets.
He urged for an intensified crackdown on the supply chain and highlighted the importance of tightening border controls to combat the issue effectively. Additionally, he mentioned plans for a new, standardized wholesale drug center in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, aimed at improving the market conditions and reducing the prevalence of counterfeit drugs.
Soludo concluded by reiterating Anambra’s status as a major trading hub in Africa and his commitment to enhancing this reputation while ensuring the safety of consumers.
