Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has expressed his willingness to advocate for a pardon for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), if Kanu demonstrates remorse and calls for peace. Gumi made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television, discussing the broader context of security challenges in Nigeria.

Kanu was convicted by the Federal High Court for terrorism, which included inciting violence against security forces. Gumi referenced historical precedents of amnesty given to notable figures, such as Ojukwu and the Niger Delta militants, suggesting a consistent approach to reconciliation and peace-building.

Gumi emphasized the need for non-violent strategies to address insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions. Highlighting the limitations of military force, he argued for dialogue and reconciliation as more effective methods for achieving stability. He pointed out ongoing calls for peace from various groups, stressing that engagement with these factions could lead to reducing violence.

In his closing remarks, Gumi affirmed his support for any individual or group inclined toward peace, underlining the importance of dialogue in improving Nigeria’s security situation.
