Hajiya Sutura Shehu-Shagari, the last surviving wife of Nigeria’s former President Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has passed away at the age of 89. The news was confirmed in a statement by Capt. Muhammad Bala Shagari (retd.), which noted that she died around 3 PM after a prolonged illness.
Hajiya Sutura was described as an embodiment of grace and strength, revered for her humility and compassion. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, whose life was characterized by dignity. Her passing is felt deeply by the Shagari family and all who knew her.
Born on February 25, 1925, in Shagari village in present-day Sokoto State, she was the widow of Nigeria’s first democratically elected president, who served from 1979 to 1983. His administration focused on significant reforms in housing, education, and agriculture. Shehu Shagari’s presidency ended with a military coup in December 1983, and he passed away in 2018.
