Several people are feared dead following an attack by armed men near the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, sending residents into panic as the assailants opened fire on members of the community.
Witnesses reported that the attackers arrived suddenly and began shooting indiscriminately, causing immediate chaos as people fled for safety. Some residents sustained fatal injuries while others escaped with varying degrees of harm. Video footage circulating online shows residents running in panic while several bodies lie on the ground.
A resident described the incident as shocking and devastating, adding that the community remains tense. Another eyewitness said the attackers operated in a coordinated, commando-style manner, leaving many unsure of the motive behind the assault.
The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the attack in a statement, condemning the violence and describing it as an attempt to destabilize the peaceful community. He said security agencies have been alerted and investigations are underway to identify those responsible.
Okoye appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives, assuring that efforts are being made to restore normalcy. He extended condolences to families affected by the attack and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting peace.
The Anambra State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for formal confirmation. However, a police source indicated that an investigation has begun and security operatives are working to track down the perpetrators.
