The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step against the rising tide of insecurity by declaring kidnapping a form of terrorism. In an extraordinary session, they recommended the death penalty for offenders, stating that there would be no option for fines or leniency in sentencing.

This resolution followed a brutal attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Ekiti State, where two worshippers were murdered, and 38 others abducted. Although all victims were rescued, the incident underscored the alarming increase in attacks on communities, schools, and places of worship.

The motion, introduced by Senator Yisa Ashiru, highlighted the need for urgent measures to address the escalating violence in Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States. Senators criticized the inadequate manpower in Nigeria’s security forces, urging for equipment upgrades and better coordination among agencies to tackle the threat effectively.

In a rare show of accountability, the Senate disbanded its Committee on National Security and Intelligence, directing all security-related committees to report their findings behind closed doors within a week. They also advocated for enhancing federal support for registered vigilante groups and reviewing firearms laws to allow responsible citizens to arm themselves for self-defense.

The session was marked by heated exchanges as lawmakers voiced their concerns about the government’s response to insecurity, with several criticizing previous administrations while emphasizing that the current government must take responsibility for ongoing crises. The Senate Leader urged for reforms within their own security committees as well.

Overall, the Senate’s actions aim to create a more robust security framework and ensure that harsher penalties are imposed on those who engage in kidnapping and other violent crimes, reflecting the urgency of the situation in Nigeria.
