The Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, for allegedly violating Senate rules.
In a report presented on Thursday, the committee also advised that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan tender a formal apology to the Senate for what it described as “disrespecting the institution.” The committee further recommended the withdrawal of her salary and security privileges for the duration of the suspension.
The disciplinary action follows Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resubmission of a sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This time, the petition was presented on behalf of her constituents, led by Zubairu Yakubu.
Despite confirming that no legal barriers existed, Senate President Akpabio allowed the petition to be formally laid before the Senate, after which it was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics for investigation and a report within four weeks.
However, controversy erupted as Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North) argued that the petition violated Senate Standing Order 40, claiming the matter was sub judice due to an ongoing court case involving Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the wife of the Senate President, Ekaette Akpabio. Monguno also raised concerns over Akpoti-Uduaghan personally signing the petition.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the committee’s recommendations in the coming days.
