The Senate’s ongoing screening of President Bola Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees saw a dramatic clash between Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Ali Ndume over the nomination of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri.
The confrontation unfolded during the second day of scrutiny of Tinubu’s 65 nominees. Omokri, present in the Senate chamber, observed as the two senators engaged in a heated exchange. Tensions escalated when Oshiomhole began discussing Omokri’s nomination, asserting that he would not be intimidated by critics.
Ndume interrupted, insisting on adherence to Senate procedures, which led to a contentious back-and-forth. Oshiomhole urged the committee chairman, Senator Abubakar Bello, to maintain order, emphasizing the public interest in Omokri’s nomination.
The debate highlighted deep divisions as Ndume countered Oshiomhole’s assertions, arguing that there were no petitions regarding Omokri’s candidacy. Oshiomhole then remarked on the need for forgiveness in politics, pointing out that past criticisms should not bar Omokri from an appointment.
The session was further complicated by another incident involving Emmanuel Adeyemi, another nominee, who faltered during his questioning about his home state’s representatives, triggering concerns about the preparedness of top-level nominees.
Throughout these exchanges, Omokri remained silent, unsure of the potential impact on his nomination as the Senate deliberations continued to unfold.
