Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has reassured the public that South East governors have not abandoned Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a media briefing in Umuahia, Otti stated that the governors are actively engaging with relevant authorities to secure Kanu’s release, although not all discussions can be shared publicly to avoid jeopardizing the process.
Otti’s comments follow a protest by Igbo elders in Umuahia who accused political leaders of neglecting Kanu’s situation and urged him to rally his colleagues to engage President Bola Tinubu on the matter. The governor expressed optimism that these ongoing efforts would yield positive results.
Additionally, Otti addressed the recurring communal clashes between the Itu community in Arochukwu and its Cross River neighbors, which have displaced many residents. He confirmed that the state government is collaborating with Cross River and Akwa Ibom to restore peace, attributing the violence to unverified reports of natural resources in the disputed area.
He reassured displaced residents that they would soon return to their homes and reiterated his commitment to improving Abia, emphasizing that he would not be swayed by political attacks.
