Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, along with other prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders from the North Central region, are urging the party to return the National Chairmanship position to their zone to complete its tenure.
This appeal was made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, where a communiqué was released. The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions that have intensified both before and after the 2023 general elections.
Current acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has faced criticism for failing to address lingering crises, which have further diminished the party’s influence. Damagum stepped into the role after former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu was removed by the court for not implementing necessary reforms.
The communiqué underscored the need for the PDP to fill the vacant National Chairman position following Ayu’s exit. It referenced the party’s constitution, which allows for appointments from the zone to fill vacant positions, as stated in Section 47 (6).
The North Central stakeholders emphasized the importance of unity and peace for the party’s future, urging all members to reach a consensus. They called for goodwill from other zones to restore the Chairmanship seat to the North Central Zone.
The communiqué concluded with a commitment to preserving the PDP as a viable platform for good governance in Nigeria. The meeting was attended by notable figures, including former governors and the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN).
