Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated a state-of-the-art leather processing and manufacturing hub in Mushin on Saturday, designed to create 10,000 direct jobs and generate over $250 million in annual export turnover when fully operational.
The facility was officially inaugurated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu during her three-day visit to Lagos, and it was named in her honor to recognize her grassroots initiatives in social investment and economic empowerment. Notably, 70% of the employment opportunities will be reserved for women and youths.
Equipped with modern machinery, the hub will support Nano, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (NMSMEs) in mass production of leather goods, including shoes, bags, and belts. The project aims to ease production bottlenecks, scale operations, and establish Lagos as the leather logistics capital of West Africa.
During the inauguration, Senator Tinubu referred to the hub as a “trailblazing project” aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on diversifying Nigeria’s economy through industrialization and innovation. She emphasized the importance of empowering artisans to compete in local and international markets.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the project would provide training and startup support to over 150,000 artisans, thereby boosting the local economy and attracting investments. “Hides and skins that once left our shores unprocessed will now be transformed here in Lagos into world-class products proudly stamped ‘Made in Lagos, Made in Nigeria’,” he asserted.
The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, highlighted that the hub will lower production costs and raise quality standards, positioning Lagos-made leather products for dominance in both local and export markets.
