Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the demolition of the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Lagos Island following a major fire outbreak that affected the structure.
The governor gave the directive on Thursday during an on-the-spot assessment of the fire scene at Martins Street, Balogun area of Lagos Island. He said the building would be pulled down once firefighters completely extinguish the inferno.
Sanwo-Olu announced that a committee led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, would supervise the demolition process.
He confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident, although several injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment. The governor urged residents and traders to stay away from the area and advised Lagosians to be more safety-conscious, especially during the dry season.
According to officials, about five buildings were affected by the fire, which started late Wednesday. Shops around Martins Street and adjoining roads have been shut, while security and emergency agencies remain on ground to prevent further damage.
The state government assured affected traders of support as emergency responders continue managing the situation.
