With less than 24 hours left before the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued to Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers House of Assembly, the state government has announced that it has not yet received the official letter regarding the budget.
The ultimatum was issued on Monday by Amaewhule and 26 lawmakers aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike, following a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed their status as legitimate members of the Assembly.
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the State Government, stated that the government learned about the ultimatum through social media. He clarified that as of close of business on Tuesday, the state government had not received any formal communication from the Assembly.
The letter emphasized that neither the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, nor the Accountant-General’s office had received the mentioned letter. Dr. Danagogo also referred to Governor Fubara’s previous state broadcast on March 2, where he expressed his commitment to abide by the rule of law, despite his personal views on the Supreme Court’s decisions.
The government reassured the public that it remains in contact with legal representatives and is awaiting the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgments. Once received, the governor intends to implement them promptly for the benefit of the people of Rivers State.
