In light of recent security incidents in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has decided to postpone his planned journey to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit. This decision comes as he awaits critical briefing updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima regarding the disturbing kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the violent attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President. According to Onanuga, President Tinubu has ordered the reinforcement of security forces in the affected regions, particularly in Eruku and the broader Ekiti Local Government Area. This move follows requests from the Kwara State governor to enhance security measures in response to the attacks.

President Tinubu aims to gather comprehensive reports on the situation in Kebbi, including insights from local leaders, before proceeding with his international engagements. He was originally set to leave Abuja today for the G20 Summit and continue on to Luanda for the AU-EU Summit. However, his departure has been halted due to the escalating security threats.

In an official statement, it was conveyed that President Tinubu expressed his concern regarding the abduction of 24 schoolgirls by bandits and the tragic loss of life, including the Vice-Principal of the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, who was killed while protecting the students during the attack on Monday.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours, has left the Zuru Emirate in a state of panic. The police have confirmed that along with the Vice-Principal’s death, at least 25 students were abducted, stirring alarm among families and the community.

President Tinubu has directed the Vice President to visit Kebbi State to assess the situation personally and communicate his sympathies. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safe return of the kidnapped students, expressing deep remorse over the loss of military personnel, including Brigadier General Musa Uba, who were killed in operations against insurgents in Borno State.

Furthermore, President Tinubu has urged security agencies to accelerate their efforts in rescuing the abducted girls and restoring peace in the affected areas. His administration remains focused on addressing the safety concerns that have been plaguing various regions in the country.
