Police Confirm 24 Dead in Jigawa Canoe Accident

At least twenty-four people have been confirmed dead following a tragic canoe accident in Adiyani village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The jigawa State Police Command announced the incident, stating that the canoe capsized while transporting passengers, leading to multiple casualties.

According to CSP Shiisu Adam, the police spokesperson, ten individuals were rescued alive, while fourteen others remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue. “The death toll has risen to twenty-four people. Ten have been rescued, while fourteen are still missing after a canoe capsized in Adiyani village,” he reported.

Notably, most of the victims were not residents of the community. CSP Adam detailed that twenty-one of the deceased hail from Yobe State, while three were locals from Adiyani village.

The police are collaborating with local divers and community members in ongoing efforts to locate the missing passengers. CSP Adam also urged residents living in riverine areas to adhere to safety measures and avoid overcrowding canoes, aiming to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The incident has plunged the affected communities into mourning, as families anxiously await news of their missing loved ones.
